Reuse, Refurbish, Recycle

Recycling in the US and Canada

US and Canadian customers who want to dispose of their used computers or monitors at any other time may also use Apple’s Recycling program by purchasing a prepaid shipping label and shipping your used computer or monitor to Apple’s recycling partner.

To recycle old equipment, just purchase a prepaid shipping label from the Electronic Recycling Program, or call 888-638-2761. The $30 (US) fee covers all costs associated with shipping used products to the Apple recycling vendor. Packaging materials are provided, if needed.

The Total Product Life Cycle

The electronics industry, as well as other industry sectors, is facing an increasing number of demands focused on reducing the environmental impacts of how products are designed, manufactured, used, and managed at end-of-life. As evidenced through "green" procurement policies and emerging European legislation such as Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) and Energy Using Products (EuP), the global marketplace is increasingly demanding product environmental improvements, as well as increased access to environmental information that relates to the product life cycle.

Globalization within the industry has impacted management of the product life cycle by involving more participants in the process, which makes the process more complex. This also poses unique challenges in determining how environmental aspects of one stage in the life cycle (material selection, for example) impact another stage in the cycle (end-of-life management, for example).

In order to meet these challenges, Dell established the Design for the Environment (DfE) Program to integrate environmental attributes into each aspect of the product life cycle, from supplier management during component manufacturing to end-of-life solutions. This methodology encourages reduction of the most significant environmental aspects of the life cycle without unnecessarily burdening the supply chain.

Environmental Management System Implementation

Dell's Product Development Group has recently achieved certification to the ISO 14001 standard, an accomplishment which took approximately two years to complete. Third-party auditing verified that our design activities are compliant with this internationally recognized standard for environmental management system criteria

Establishing a formalized approach to our planning, goal setting, auditing and corrective actions will help support regulatory compliance and continual improvement in our product design. A good example of where ISO 14001 certification will support adherence to new legislation is in EuP. This law refers to ISO 14001 as a way to demonstrate compliance to a specific component of the requirement. Becoming certified is a way in which Dell has enabled our strategy of being proactive.

Gaining certification for Dell's product development organization is part of our overall corporate ISO 14001 certification program, which now covers all manufacturing sites around the world and includes organizations such as Services, Procurement and Logistics..

Toshiba’s Environmental Commitment
At Toshiba, we believe that investing in the earth means that we are investing in the future of its inhabitants. We strive to apply stringent environmental standards to the products we’re currently manufacturing. In fact, every notebook computer we currently produce is RoHS compliant.

We also want to ensure that older notebook computers, projectors, LCD monitors and Pocket PCs that weren’t developed under our strict environmental guidelines are safely dismantled and retired. These efforts are reflected in a number of Toshiba environmental initiatives:

Toshiba’s Environmental Recovery and Recycling Effort (TERRE)
What happens when non-functioning PCs are sent to landfills? Many of the materials used to make notebook computers, projectors, LCD monitors and Pocket PCs contain toxic elements that pose environmental risks and can also affect our personal health when they seep into our ecosystem.

What is TERRE?
TERRE is a proactive program to ensure that end-of-life computers are disposed of in an environmentally respectful manner. Toshiba will recycle any manufacturer’s notebook computer, projector, LCD monitor, or pocket PC free of charge. The original packaging of the product is also included in this program.

At this time the TERRE program won't accept the following: desktop PCs, printers, faxes, CRT monitors and separate computer components such as hard drives, mother boards, memory, video and network cards, etc.

How do I arrange to send my old devices to TERRE?
Click here for a step by step process on how you can arrange to send your devices to TERRE. Ultimately, you will determine when you would like UPS to pick up your old PC products at no cost to you.
If you have any additional questions, please e-mail TERRE@toshiba.ca for additional information.

What if my PC still works?

Should an individual wish to dispose of a functioning PC, there are a number of worthwhile programs that channel these systems to needy organizations in the community.

Where does my old non-functioning notebook PC, projector, LCD monitor or Pocket PC go when I use TERRE?

When Toshiba takes possession of the non-functioning PC product, they are then disassembled and the PC components are separated and placed in temporary storage bins for recycling.

Does Toshiba do the recycling?
Toshiba has partnered with a registered ISO 14001 company that disassembles incoming notebooks and personal computers into their basic components such as plastics, circuit boards and metals.
  • Plastics are ground to achieve consistency of size and recycled into other useful materials such as foundation pads for buildings, containers used for agriculture potting systems and plastic lumber.

  • Circuit boards are smelted to reclaim various precious and semi precious metals.

  • The metal portions are separated and reprocessed into basic commodities, such as copper, aluminum and steel.

HP Planet Partners recycling

HP's Planet Partners recycling service provides an easy way to recycle any brand of computer equipment or HP printing supplies. HP's state-of-the-art processes ensure that unwanted hardware or empty HP printing supplies are recycled responsibly.

Why Recycle?
Old computers, notebook computers, and other electronic equipment contain hazardous chemicals that can be harmful to the environment when disposed in a landfill with trash. By recycling, the metals, plastics, and components found in an old computer will be broken down and reused to make new products. And, the environment is protected from any uncontrolled release of harmful chemicals.

ASUS works with recycling vendors with the highest standards for protecting our environment, ensuring worker safety, and complying with global environmental laws. Our commitment to recycling our old equipment grows out of our work to protect the environment in many ways.

For electronics recycling vendors: please contact ASUS for information regarding proper disassembly and handling of ASUS products.

Please select the region you are in for further information about product recycling and contacts.
