NLEN
was established in 1990 as a branch of the Canadian Environment Network (RCEN),
which began in 1980. RCEN has over 2000 member groups. All provinces and the
Yukon have active Environment Networks all funded by the RCEN. The NLEN is a
member of the Provincial Wellness Coalition - Linking Health and the
Environment. The NLEN recognizes the link between environment and nature
tourism.
The NLEN is a non-advocacy organization that serves more than 30 member groups
throughout the province. The goal of the NLEN is to facilitate communication
between non-government environmental organizations and assist with initiatives
through non-advocacy means; as well as position the NLEN as a point of contact
for municipalities, government departments, media and the public on
environmental issues, including environment as it relates to human health, and
environment as it relates to nature tourism. Member groups operate to
conserve, protect or restore the Earth's ecosystem through action, education,
stewardship, and/or modeling ecologically sound ways of life. All provinces and
the Yukon have Environmental Networks funded by the Canadian Environment
Network.

Logo
The logo offers the idea of a bird in flight. However it also suggests an ocean wave or rolling hills. The colour green represents health and well being while the subtle shades beneath represent the various groups and interests of the Coalition. The colours have also been chosen to reflect harmony and togetherness, symbolizing the Coalition's collaborative process for achieving its goals.
Funding
The
Department of Health and Community Services, Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador, provides funding for the Coalition. Eastern Health provides staff and
infrastructure support.
