Founded in 1911, the Telecom Pioneers is the
worlds largest industry-based volunteer organization. The 750,000 members
(20,000 in Canada) of the Pioneer organization are employees and retirees of
the telecommunications industry.
The Pioneers mission is to build healthy
communities. Our programs target needs in areas of education, health and human
services, life enrichment and the environment. Although Pioneers address the
diverse needs of our communities, our prime focus is on education and the
e-world.
Therefore, it is no surprise that the
Canadian Pioneers are known for programs like Computers for Schools. While
strongly focused on educational programs, Pioneers also work to improve life for
homeless people, adults and children with disabilities, people requiring basic
living needs and victims of disasters. Canadian Pioneers are making a very
positive and significant impact on Canadian society. We believe with our
efforts we are Pioneering the Future.
Co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the Telecom
Pioneers, Computers for Schools (CFS) is a national, volunteer-based initiative
that collects, repairs, and delivers surplus computers donated by
governments, private corporations, and individuals to schools, public
libraries, and non-profit learning organizations across Canada. In addition to
coordinating computer donors and recipients, CFS oversees numerous repair and
refurbishing centre's throughout Canada, where surplus computers are cleaned,
refurbished, and prepared for delivery.
Workshops are staffed by recent technical
graduates, students, and volunteers, including current and retired
telecommunications professionals. After refurbishment the computers are
distributed based on student population to the five school districts in the
province, with approximately 10% allocated to public libraries and 5% to other
not-for-profit learning organizations.
The CFS program in Newfoundland and Labrador
has grown rapidly since 1994 and in 1999 was incorporated as a separate
not-for-profit corporation. This organization Provincial Information
Equipment Recycling and Refurbishing Enterprises or PIERRE has an extensive
Board of Directors to manage the program with representatives from the three
sectors government, corporate, and voluntary.
